by Daniel Olsen | With their first loss of the season to Skyridge last week, there was some doubt on whether Orem could build on their third consecutive title last year. They erased that doubt by rebounding to fight for a 24-14 home win over the Alta Hawks.
The game started a little bit late just because they wanted to make sure everyone in attendance was wearing their masks to make the conditions safe for everyone involved. The game went scoreless in the first quarter with both sides warming up their punt teams.
The second quarter was a different story with Orem kicker Joshua Daley connecting on a 34 yard field goal to give the Tigers the first score of the game. With 2:43 to go in the half, Orem running back Joe Smith had the biggest drive of the game until that point with a 40 yard rushing-touchdown. The Tigers looked like they would definitely go into halftime with a lead but surprisingly they didn’t. Alta connected on their first score of the game on a pass from QB Ethan Jackson to Isaak Hanson with just under a minute to play. Then, the Hawks quickly got the ball back and ended the half with a SportsCenter Top 10 worthy play. This time, Jackson threw for a much longer 58 yard pass that D’andre Rudolph caught in impressive fashion.
In the third quarter, Orem quarterback Lance Reynolds finally threw for his lone passing touchdown of the night. Smith was again the scorer as he caught the 15 yard pass to lead the game in scoring with that reception to match his rushing touchdown from the first half. Halfway threw the third quarter, Orem exploded again for a rushing touchdown, this time a 68 yard run by Kolton Brown-Dye.
There was no scoring in the final quarter as Orem fought to hold on to their safe 10 point lead. As Coach Sewell predicted, this game was won in the trenches and Orem won because every player settled in and played their assignments well enough to win the game. While it wasn’t a blowout, it was an entertaining game that ended with the favored Tigers coming out on top like we predicted in our preview.
The Orem Tigers will take on the Logan Grizzlies next week while the Alta Hawks will play last week’s featured Corner Canyon Chargers.
