After a demoralizing loss against Utah Tech, the Weber State Wildcats host the #13 ranked Utah Utes at the Dee Events Center. In a game where the ‘Cats hope to get back on track at home, they face one of the nation’s top teams where they hope to keep the score from getting out of hand.
Four Quarters and a Prayer
Unfortunately for WSU, they are completely outclassed by the undefeated Utes. This game isn’t going to be like any other this season. The Utes can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the country, even blowing out #16 Oklahoma 124-78. They have the second-highest scoring offense in the nation with 93.2 points per game and a stout defense, only allowing 58.7 per outing. The charge is led by Alissa Pili, with 20.7 PPG and an offense that shoots efficiently (53.2%) that is adept from three (35.3%). Utah outmatches the Wildcats in every significant statistical category.
The defense has been a strength for the Wildcats, but they haven’t faced anyone like the Utes. The depth of these top teams is too much to bear for a top-heavy roster like Weber State. Daryn Hickok and Jadyn Matthews have been the top producers and can usually keep them in games, but unless the entire starting rotation and bench could produce unprecedented numbers, this will have to be chalked up as a loss.
The offensive play and depth will overpower the ‘Cats, but be on the lookout for any significant performances. Competing against a ranked team will give Weber State’s players a chance to showcase their abilities against one of the best in the nation, and a solid performance can really make a statement for any individual. Keep eyes on the two Wildcat stars for breakout offensive showings, and for players like Vicky Parra and Ava Williams to step up on the defensive side of the ball.
The Wildcats will tip off against the Utes at 5:30 p.m. MST where they will face their most difficult challenge of the year.
