STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Facing an 11-point deficit in the second half, Southern Utah fought back. Tevian Jones had an opportunity to tie the game and send it to overtime. However, his potential tying three-point shot fell short and the Thunderbirds took their first-ever WAC loss. Certainly, not the kind of first SUU wanted to see, but as they say, you can’t win them all. Tarleton’s bench shined in the win Garry Clark and Tiger Booker coming off the bench to combine for 30 points. Starters Shakur Daniel and Lue Williams had 28 together. The Thunderbird defense was torched and all out of sorts allowing 58 points just from those four players alone in the loss.
Fausett Moves Up
The main highlight for SUU on Thursday night came from Maizen Fausett. He moved up to 6th in all-time scoring for the Thunderbirds after his 14-point performance. That number tied Drake Allen for most points on the night for SUU. Sadly, their 28-point effort was not enough to get out of Wisdom Gym with the win. Jason Spurgin had 11 while Jones was held to only 9 points. Harrison Butler, who had the clutch shot to get the UT-Rio Grande Valley game to overtime, only scored 2 points.
Next Up
SUU and Tarleton will play again this season. The Texans are set to visit the America First Event Center on February 9th. For now, the Thunderbirds head an hour and a half west for a game with Abilene Christian. Similar to many of the other WAC teams from Texas, the two will do battle for the first time ever.
