By AJ Conlin: Region 8/10 Insider
The region appears to have figured itself out in terms of standings and team strength after the first week of play. Stansbury, Park City, and Jordan all won their first games and are vying for the Region Championship early. It will definitely take some time for the full picture to develop, so it’s time to focus on the short term. So, without further ado, here is a week four analysis.
Cottonwood vs Stansbury
Cottonwood was shut out in a 47-0 loss to Stansbury. The Colts were abysmal on offense. They completed 8-16 passes for just 27 yards and an interception. On the ground, they carried the ball 25 times for -12 yards (yes that’s a negative). By halftime, it was 41-0 and became the battle of the junior varsity teams, and they still couldn’t hold off the Stallions, allowing another touchdown.
Overall, they did not play very well at all and are not looking good so far this season.
The win over Cottonwood was the confidence booster the Stallions needed after taking a couple of tough losses to good teams from Cache Valley. The Stallions haven’t uploaded their stats for the win, but after watching the game, it looked as though they used it to revive their passing game. Stansbury has a tough run game, but their pass game this season has been lacking. In this game, they just kept slinging the ball down the field.
This year, the Stallions are transitioning to the rising stars on their team and are having a little bit of trouble doing it. They look like the only team that could give Park City a run for their money for the Region 10 Championship this season.
Hillcrest
44-0 loss to Park City
The Huskies took a tough loss to Park City. Their passing game was completely disrupted, completing just 6-31 passes for 35 yards and an interception. Their ground game was not having a good night either, running the ball 21 times and only picking up 55 yards. Overall, the Huskies are still slowly progressing. Last year, the final score might have been 63-0.
So far, there are signs of life from Hillcrest, and they are starting to get better and could win some region games this year.
The Miners are looking strong to start the season. In their 44-0 win over Hillcrest, they went 10-17 for 143 yards and a touchdown on the passing game. Park City also rushed the ball 49 times for 239 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. They lost one fumble.
The Miners are proving that their run game unstoppable. As of right now, they are the favorite to win the Region Championship.
Jordan
26-23 win over Murray
The Beetdiggers came off their bye week and started region play with a rough statement win over Murray. There isn’t much about this game in the stats department, but they passed for three touchdowns and ran for another one. They failed all but one conversion after the touchdown, with their one success being a quick handoff for two points. They also snagged an interception.
It’s looking like the Beetdiggers might be a region competitor this year among some of the underdog teams.
The first region game this season wasn’t too bad for the Spartans They went 11-27 on their passes for 88 yards and an interception. They ran the ball 32 times for 150 yards and scored two touchdowns. Their defense was able to pick up five sacks, two interceptions, one fumble recovery, a blocked field goal, and a safety. Their special teams made an appearance after they returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.
Murray is looking like they could improve their record from last year, but only time will tell.
Tooele

The Buffaloes are not looking good at all. This season is looking like it could be incredibly long for them.
Region 10 is all over the place, in terms of talent and skill level, coaching, and the strength of the overall teams. Park City should the Region Championship this season over Stansbury. The key game this week is Tooele vs. Cottonwood. Somebody is going to win. Who will it be? Region 10 is going to be an important one to watch. There will be many more nail-biters and blowouts to come. Just sit back and watch.
