by AJ Conlin: The Region 8/10 Insider

This week in Region 10 was incredibly important. Stansbury traveled up to Park City to play what will probably end up being the Region Championship game. The victor was Park City. There were obviously other region games, too. Jordan played Cottonwood, which Jordan won comfortably. Another was Tooele vs. Hillcrest, in which Tooele blew out Hillcrest. Murray traveled to play Payson for the non-region game of the week.

Jordan vs. Cottonwood (55-35)

The Jordan Beetdiggers hosted the Cottonwood Colts for a thrilling game of football. The Colts had trouble keeping their drives going all game, whereas the Beetdiggers were able to move the ball almost freely and score eight touchdowns in a 55-35 victory.

Offensively, both teams had some impressive stats. The Beetdiggers completed 17 of their 29 passes for 364 yards, six touchdowns, and an interception, with 152 yards on the ground and two more touchdowns. The Colts went 12-28 on their passes for 254 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception, with 189 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

Defensively, both teams played pretty evenly, but in the end, Jordan held Cottonwood to less yardage. Both teams caught one interception and one fumble recovery each.

Overall, this game was exciting, and definitely worth the watch. Jordan showed the true power of their offense, and brought home the win.

The Beetdiggers are looking good after this win, going to 2-1 in region play, but will need to tighten up their defense for their game this week. They will make the trip to play Tooele today at 7 p.m.

The Colts are still struggling mightily, now at 0-3 in region play, and are looking helpless so far this season. Their next game is at home against Park City on Friday at 7 p.m.

Murray vs. Payson (48-7)

The Murray Spartans traveled to play the Payson Lions. The Spartans were only able to gain 108 total yards of offense, and their one touchdown came through the air. They went 7 for 27 for just 64 yards, the aforementioned touchdown, and an interception. The run game was not much better. They had 19 carries for 44 yards and two fumbles.

Defensively, they did snatch an interception and fall on top of a fumble, but they still gave up 631 yards and seven touchdowns.

Overall, the Spartans did not come to play in Payson, and took home another loss. They are now 0-6, hold an 0-2 record in region play, and will have to do some work before they’re ready for their next game. They will be welcoming Hillcrest of Friday at 7 p.m.

Tooele vs. Hillcrest (35-6)

The Tooele Buffaloes welcomed the Hillcrest Huskies to their home field, and sent the home with another loss. It was all Buffaloes in this game, with their run game bringing them over the edge, and pushing the game in their favor.

Offensively, both teams were fairly successful. The Buffaloes were able to pick up 435 yards of offense, 396 of those from the run game alone. They also scored five touchdowns and lost one fumble. The Huskies were only able to scrounge 237 total yards, with one touchdown through the air and one fumble.

Tooele’s defense played great, whereas Hillcrest’s defense struggled to pick up stops. Both teams grabbed a fumble, and Hillcrest hauled in an interception, but the rest of the defense just depended on stopping the other team from getting a first down, which Tooele did well and Hillcrest really struggled with.

This game showed how much Tooele can do with their run game, and how much Hillcrest is missing their starting quarterback.

The Buffaloes are now 2-0 in region play, and will have to be ready for their game against Jordan, which they’ll play on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Huskies have dropped to 0-2 in region play, and are struggling to find an answer for the quarterback position. They’ll have to have something figured out when they go to play Murray on Friday at 7 p.m.
