by AJ Conlin: The Region 8/10 Insider

This week in Region 8 was very eventful. Uintah made the trip down to Orem for their second consecutive week to play Mountain View. Provo hosted Timpanogos and sent them back with a loss. The game between Salem Hills and Spanish Fork was incredibly close, and ended up with the Skyhawks keeping their winning streak alive. Finally, Payson put on a show in their non-region match-up against Murray.

Mountain View vs. Uintah (31-14)

The Mountain View Bruins sent the Uintah Utes home with a 31-14 loss this season, and looked good doing it. The Bruin defense wasn’t letting the Utes have anything.

Even though the Utes were able to garner 338 total yards of offense, the Bruins stopped them when it mattered most. They even had to stop Uintah after their own offense turned the ball over three times! Mountain View’s offense wasn’t too shabby either, moving the ball 423 yards for three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown.

Overall, the Bruins were in the driver’s seat the whole game. Their defense was able to get enough done to keep the Utes from running away early, and their offense was able to penetrate the defense to bring home the win.

Uintah moves to 0-3 in region play, and has to welcome the fearsome Skyhawks of Salem Hills to Vernal this Friday at 7 p.m.

Mountain View is now 1-2 in region play, but has to turn around and make the grueling 10 minute drive to play Timpanogos on Friday at 7 p.m.

Payson vs. Murray

The Payson Lions hosted the Murray Spartans from Region 10 for the non-region matchup of the week. The Lions killed the Spartans 42-7, and left little remains.

Offensively, the Lions completed 35-46 of their passes from three separate quarterbacks. They accumulated a whopping 563 yards, five touchdowns, with one interception. They ran the ball 25 times, but only gained 68 yards and two touchdowns, with one fumble.

Payson’s defense held Murray’s offense to just 108 total yards. They grabbed an interception, punched out two fumbles, had six tackles for loss, one sack, and 36 total tackles.

Payson sits at 1-1 in region play, and has gained some serious momentum after that game. They need all the positive vibes they can get as they go into their game against Provo today at 7 p.m.

Salem Hills vs. Spanish Fork

The Salem Hills Skyhawks just barely had the 16-13 edge over the Spanish Fork Dons. It was a hard fought defensive game, with the game being decided by just three points. The Dons scored a touchdown late, and attempted the onside kick, but weren’t able to get the ball back to make a last ditch effort toward the end zone.

Spanish Fork had the offensive edge in this game, collecting 340 yards, as opposed to 240 yards from Salem Hills. What made this game so close was the turnover game. The Dons threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball once, whereas the Skyhawks only threw once interception.

Overall, this game was incredibly exciting and really close to throwing Salem Hills off of the groove they have going. Spanish Fork could have won this game, and had every opportunity to, but couldn’t stay away from the turnovers, and it eventually killed their game.

The Skyhawks improve to 2-1 in region play, and are looking to improve on that record when they make the trek over to Vernal to play Uintah today at 7 p.m.

The Dons are now 2-1 in region play, heading into their bye week. They’ll need the extra time to game plan against Provo, who they’ll play when they return on Friday, September 29th at 7 p.m.
