The Payson Lions hosted the Timpanogos Timberwolves for their Homecoming football game on Friday, September 29th. The game was back and forth all night, but ultimately ended with the Timberwolves on top, 35-30.

This game was an air raid attack by both teams, with very little coming from the run game. This made for a thrilling game with both sides running up and down the field. Neither team cracked 150 rushing yards all game.

Game Stats

This game is only another example of Payson’s ability to gain monster yardage, yet inability to find the end zone and score. The Lions threw for a combined 479 yards through the air off of an impressive 55% completion percentage, with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Timpanogos only had one quarterback in this game, and he had quite the stat line. Chase Riggs threw for 319 yards and an unreal 67% completion rate. Riggs added three touchdowns and threw no interceptions.

On the ground, Payson and Timpanogos were both fairly quiet. They had 53 and 127 yards respectively. The Timberwolves ended up with two touchdowns, but the Lions had none.

Defensively, both teams were fairly even. They had one fumble recovery each, with Payson adding on a blocked punt.

Player of the game

The Hive Sports Player of the Game of this contest is Cooper Swasey of Payson. Swasey racked up an impressive 240 receiving yards, two touchdowns, seven tackles, and three passes defended. Swasey was all over the field all night, and was key to keeping the Lions so close in this game.

Up Next

The Lions have another region challenge on their grueling schedule coming up this week, which they’ll have to quickly dust themselves off and plan for to be ready. They will be playing the Spanish Fork Dons on Friday at 7 PM.

The Timberwolves have a very important game coming for them this week. The Salem Hills Skyhawks stand directly ahead of them on the region leader-board, and a win over them would be huge, and push them into second place. The contest against the Skyhawks will be at home on Friday at 7 PM.
