The Layton Lancers (21-4) opened up the game on an 8-0 run against the Lone Peak Knights in the 6A quarterfinals and never looked back in an 86-55 win. Senior Josh Checketts scored the game’s first six points, and senior Jack Godderidge scored for the Lancers in the fast start. Lancer sophomore guard Karter Miller was the game’s leading scorer with 26 points on 9-16 shooting, including 5-6 from behind the three-point line.
The Lancers dominated the game’s pace, outscoring the Knights 25-6 on fast break points. Their defense was on point, holding the Knights to 37% shooting. The number six ranked Knights finish the season with a 15-9 record, while the number three ranked Landers move into the semifinals against Region 1 foe Davis Darts.

Game highlights
The first quarter was all Lancers, as Miller poured in seven points to lead the fast start. The Knights’ early struggle to keep pace with the Lancers led to a Lancer 19-8 first-quarter lead. Ty Cogswell scored the first points for the Knight, two free throws at the 5:17 mark of the first quarter.
The Lancers continued to pull away from the Knights in the second quarter by scoring the next two baskets. Senior Jonah Fullmer and Checketts baskets made the score 23-8 with 6:34 in the second quarter. Miller continued to light up the Knights with 10 points in the quarter. Sam Suarez of the Knights was the bright spot, scoring eight points in the quarter to keep the game within reach. The score at halftime was 35-22 in favor of the Lancers.
The game would not stay within reach long for the Knights as the Lancers opened up the third quarter on a 14-2 run and made the score 49-24 at the 4:30 mark. The Lancers scored 29 points in the quarter, led by Miller’s eight, and senior Sam Romer scored six straight points in a minute. Logan Brimhall scored eight of the Knight’s 15 points in the quarter. The quarter would end with the Lancers ahead 64-37.
The fourth quarter started with the Lancers in control of the game. Eight different players scored, led by Allen, who scored five points. The Lancers outscored the Knights 22-18, making the final score 86-55.

Outstanding performers
Miller continues his outstanding play with 26 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Team defense was key for the Lancers as they held Knights leading scorer Crew Fotheringham to six points. Only a sophomore, Fotheringham, came into the game averaging 13 points per game. Defensively, the Lancers team defense forced the Knights into tough shots and the Knights into 13 turnovers.
The Knights bench players scored 30 of the team’s 55 points, led by Brimhall and Suarez, who both scored 12.
