In a historic showdown at the 2025 Mountain West Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament, the No. 4 seed San Diego State Aztecs triumphed over the No. 2 seed Wyoming Cowgirls with a 72–68 victory in triple overtime at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. This marathon match marked the longest championship game in Mountain West history and secured the Aztecs’ first conference tournament title since 2012 .

Game Overview: 

The championship clash was a testament to resilience and determination. San Diego State, under the leadership of head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson, showcased unwavering tenacity throughout the game. The Aztecs’ defense was pivotal, limiting Wyoming to just four points in the final overtime period, which proved decisive in clinching the title. The crowd remained in their seats until the very end of this matchup that swung back and forth and was intense cinematic with lead changes, and a few potentially controversial calls against each team. The atmosphere was electric!

Key Performances: For Wyoming, senior center Allyson Fertig delivered an outstanding performance, recording 17 points and 18 rebounds. Despite her efforts, the Cowgirls simpky ran out of time and couldn’t overcome the Aztecs’ relentless defense and clutch plays in the closing moments .

Season Milestones: This victory marked San Diego State’s 25th win of the season, the program’s highest since their 2012–13 campaign. The Aztecs’ impressive run through the tournament, including an upset over top-seeded UNLV in the semifinals, earned them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, their first appearance in over a decade .

Local Interest: Utah State’s women’s team managed to get into the tournament, drawing a number 10 seed in round 1 against #7 Air Force. That game ended with a 59 – 66 defeat to Air Force. The lady Aghies had previously lost to the AFA back in January 66 – 78 in Colorado, then again at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan in February 77 – 82. Thus, completing the sweep for the cadets in all 3 matchups this season. 

Looking Ahead

With momentum on their side, the Aztecs are poised to make a significant impact in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Terry-Hutson expressed immense pride in her team’s performance, highlighting their resilience and commitment throughout the season .
