April 19, 2025 — Salt Lake City, UT Devon Dampier Shines as Utah’s Offense Triumphs in 22 Forever Spring football game

The University of Utah football team concluded its spring practices with the annual 22 Forever Game at Rice-Eccles Stadium, offering fans a glimpse into the Utes’ evolving roster and strategies ahead of the 2025 season. In a spirited offense-vs-defense scrimmage, the defense came out swinging early on, taking the lead for most of the game. However, the offense rallied in the second half to secure a 42–38 victory, showcasing the potential of new quarterback Devon Dampier as well as other emerging talents. Including, returning sophomore, Isaac Wilson, who stepped into the role of starting QB last season after Cameron Rising left due to what turned into a season ending injury vs. Baylor.

A slow start to the offense helped the defense squad dominate early, leading 26–14 at halftime. They capitalized on every one of the offense’s initial struggles. However, the tide turned as junior quarterback Devon Dampier, a transfer from New Mexico, found his rhythm. Dampier led four of Utah’s first five touchdown drives, including a notable 7-yard touchdown pass to running back Daniel Bray that tied the game in the fourth quarter .

Dampier’s performance was marked by his elusiveness in the pocket and accurate passing, even with the starting offensive line sidelined to prevent injuries. His ability to extend plays and connect with receivers like Zach Williams and Landen King highlighted his potential as a dynamic leader for the Utes’ offense .

Emerging Offensive Weapons

Running back NaQuari Rogers, another transfer from New Mexico, contributed significantly with two rushing touchdowns, demonstrating his explosive playmaking abilities . Wide receiver Mana Carvalho also made an impact with a 50-yard screen pass reception that set up a scoring opportunity, indicating a promising synergy with Dampier .

Defensive Highlights and Areas for Improvement

Despite the loss, the defense showcased its strength in the first half, with linebacker Christian Thatcher and cornerback LaTristan Thompson making notable plays. However, head coach Kyle Whittingham pointed out the need for improvement in the receiving corps, citing multiple dropped passes that stalled offensive drives .

Looking Ahead

The Utes will kick off their 2025 season on August 30 with an away game against UCLA, followed by their home opener against Cal Poly on September 6 . With Dampier leading the offense and a mix of seasoned players and new talent, Utah aims to make a strong impression in their second year in the Big 12 Conference.

The 22 Forever game is a tradition that honors the memory of former players Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe, both of whom wore the number 22. Both of whom had their lives cut short. The game also serves as a fundraiser for the 22 Forever Memorial Scholarship, which has raised over $900,000 since its inception.
