On Oct. 3, 2025, the BYU Cougars faced off against the West Virginia Mountaineers at LaVell Edwards Stadium for the first time in college football history. Coming into the game, BYU was a 19.5-point favorite over the Mountaineers, who started redshirt freshman quarterback Khalil Wilkins — their third starting QB of the season. BYU won 38-24 in a fashionable yet sloppy way.

BYU’s defense played well in the first half, holding West Virginia to 10 points — a 45-yard field goal and a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Diore Hubbard after a BYU fumble inside its own 10-yard line. The defense also recorded an interception by Khalil Wilkins deep in West Virginia territory, setting up a BYU touchdown.
In the second quarter, linebacker Jack Kelly suffered a left arm and shoulder injury that sidelined him for the rest of the game. Linebacker Isaiah Glasker also left as a precautionary measure; he had been listed as probable on the injury report earlier in the week.
The loss of the two linebackers proved noticeable in the second half, as they allowed 14 points,
In total, BYU allowed 135 passing yards and 156 rushing yards.
