For the first time in school history, Utah Valley University is not the little brother of the state.
The mean green Wolverines came into the Marriott center and beat the hosting BYU Cougars by 13 points in front of 16,003 fans. This was mostly due to stellar scoring performances by Conner Toolson, Brandon Randolph and Isaac Neilson. Each of them scored over 20 points.
These three Wolverines took the mantle as the “Big Three” of the night in place of Lone Peak High products Mika, Emery and Haws.
Emery did have a game high 37 points and broke his own school single game scoring record. Eric Mika added 22. TJ Haws was the odd man out with only 6 points though.
This game had more points than an NBA All-Star game as both teams scored in triple figures. This is especially impressive since college games are only 40 minutes long.
UVU is off to a good start in what they hope will be a conference title year. This would be their only way to punch a ticket to the NCAA tournament as the Western Athletic Conference is a smaller, one bid league.
BYU started the season strong but will need to use this as a learning experience if they want to accomplish anything in the West Coast Conference.
A word to the wise: Your defense you must clean to beat the Mean Green Wolverines.
