In the ancient legend, the Greek army thought they had the battle won when the Trojans gave them a gift they perceived to be a sign that they had surrendered. It was really a place for the Trojan army to hide so that they could defeat the Greek army in their pajamas at night.
In classic BYU fashion the Cougars surprised the Trojans of the University of Southern California with a Trojan Horse of their own by winning their second overtime game in as many weeks.
USC was ranked #24 in the nation and came into this game 2-0 after winning a close one to Fresno State and then beating Stanford after losing their starting quarterback. This seemed like a much more difficult task the Cougars would face than Tennessee.
It was a close battle for the entire game. Neither team ever lead by more than a touchdown. It was a 17-17 stalemate for 25 minutes of the game before some action happened in the final quarter. After USC scored off a 30 yard touchdown pass to go up 24-17, BYU responded with a 32 yard field goal from Jake “The Make” Oldroyd and a 16 yard run by Zach Wilson to go up 27-24. USC got a field goal to tie the game up. At this point it seemed the Trojan army had won. However, BYU connected a field goal and then caught a game-winning interception.
Overall it was the best win of the year for BYU who is now 1-0 against the SEC and 1-1 against the PAC-12. They have an opportunity to defeat another ranked PAC-12 team when the Washington Huskies come to Lavell Edwards Stadium next week.
Player of the Game: Jake Oldroyd
Jake was 3/4 on field goals and is starting to become one of the most accurate kickers in the nation. Time will tell if he keeps it up but with 12 points Jake was the leading scorer for BYU. Expect Jake to be a big factor against a tough Washington Huskies team next week.
Bottom Line: Overall this is a great win for BYU but the schedule doesn’t get any easier. This all but guarantees another bowl season for the Cougars as the schedule lightens up a little in October and especially at the end of November. This will be an exciting season if BYU can continue to be clutch. You might have to start calling them the Cardiac Cougars!
