Real Salt Lake Keeps Fighting

by Miguel Cabrera | After the 2-0 loss versus Kansas City, RSL wants to put the group stage aside and focus on the knockout round. The team had great opportunities to tie the game, but the great work of Tim Melia prevented them from doing so. Johnny Russell of Kansas City scored the first goal just 50 seconds after the match began; the goal came after a series of rebounds against RSL.

After that tough start, RSL showed improvement throughout the match. They had a couple of opportunities that the defense and the goalkeeper covered up, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. In the 86th minute Gerso Fernandes made an excellent move that put the final score 2-0.

After this result Real Salt Lake depended on other teams to continue on the tournament, but thanks to the 2-2 draw between Minnesota United and Colorado, RSL advanced to the next round; their next opponent will be the San Jose Earthquakes.

The team, led by Matias Almeyda, had a total of 2 wins and a draw in the group stage, scoring 6 goals and only receiving 3. It will certainly be a tricky match for RSL but hopefully they have learned from the mistakes they made against Kansas City and the team improves their collective game to become more solid in the defense line.

The match will be played Monday, July 27 at 6:30 PM MST. Check local listings for broadcast information.
