Corner Canyon Chargers Make History

Corner Canyon Chargers Make History

by Daniel Olsen | With most pro sports cancelled around the nation, the Bingham High Miners vs Corner Canyon High Chargers was the game to watch Friday evening as it was nationally televised on ESPN. With a final score of 42-20, Corner Canyon moved into sole possession of the fourth longest win streak in state history with 29 straight victories. It wasn’t easy at first but the Chargers made quick work of the Miners on the other side of the freeway in Salt Lake County.

Both teams play at the 6A division which is the largest in the state of Utah. The Miners play in South Jordan while the Chargers play in Draper. There were top recruits on both sides in this game. Jaxson Dart is a nice QB who transferred to Corner Canyon from Roy High School which was a run heavy offense. He now has plenty of weapons at his disposal and has taken full advantage of the most electric offense in the state.

For a while, it looked like Bingham might make this game interesting. While their team has had its share of adversity, they seemed ready for this game. Their plan was definitely to slow the game down and after converting a few fake punts in the same drive, the Miners found themselves down only 21-13 at halftime.

In the second half though it was all Chargers, who threw for 3 more passing touchdowns to add to their total of 6 touchdowns. They mostly shut out Bingham in the second half with the exception of one allowed touchdown in the waning minutes of the game.

Some key guys to look at on Corner Canyon are Jackson Light and His QB Dart. Light is the top ranked offensive lineman and second overall prospect in the state of Utah according to 247 Sports composite rankings. He is currently committed to Oregon while Dart, the QB he protects, might be headed to nearby BYU.

On the Bingham Side, Viliami Pouha is the 7th ranked player in the state in the class of 2021. He put pressure on the Chargers early on but eventually the quick-tempo offense was too much to handle. Bingham goes 0-2 for the first time in nearly 15 years but it must be noted that they started with one of the most difficult schedules in the state. They lost their first game to Skyridge (3-0). Skyridge has one by an average of 23 points per game against solid teams in Alta, Bingham, and Orem.

Bingham also dealt with several players testing positive for COVID-19 which pushed back their season opener a week. Several players couldn’t play in that game as they were still recovering. It will be interesting to see how these teams do as the season progresses.
