by Daniel Olsen | The Cougars have played the Midshipmen a total of two times. They have ironically never played in Provo though. Their first meeting was in the 1978 Holiday Bowl. At this point the Cougars had yet to win a bowl game in team history but had played in a couple good bowl games before that. This was the first of what would be 11 Holiday Bowl appearances for the Cougars. It was a close game but the Midshipmen won by the final score of 23-16. The starting quarterback for this game was Jim McMahon who ironically started the season as the team’s punter but filled in when the starting QB Marc Wilson got injured against Colorado State.
The Cougars returned the favor with a win over Navy on their home field in Annapolis, Maryland. The rematch was played on September 16, 1989. This time another Heisman caliber quarterback was under Center. Ty Detmer had not won the Heisman yet but was already having a good year. The Cougars won their season opener 24-3 at New Mexico but then lost their home opener to another group of Cougars from Washington State. It was a 41-46 shootout but it sparked what would be an impressive 10 win season.
While we are still waiting on the Midshipmen to schedule a return game to Provo, it will be a good way to enjoy a nice end to the Labor Day. The game will be broadcast on ABC at 6 PM MST. College Gameday announcers Kirk Herbstreit and Reece Davis will be calling the game.
