Weber Weekly Word: Men and Women Split Hoops Matchups

It was a wild weekend for the Weber State Wildcats in each of their hoops matchups. After a few days to dive in, it’s time to look at just what happen for both the men and women’s hoops teams.

Weber State Men’s Basketball

After two tough road losses that pushed the Weber State Men’s basketball team out of first place in the Big Sky Conference, the Wildcats were looking forward to returning home for a rematch against Sacramento State. On January 29, 2022, the Wildcats beat Sacramento State 79-59 on the road and they were looking to complete the season sweep.

Weber State hosted Sacramento State on Thursday, February 17, 2022. The Wildcats got off to a bit of a slow start in the first half, and found themselves trailing by one at halftime, 35-34. The Wildcats flipped the script in the second half and outscored Sacramento State 31-15 to earn the victory 65-50. JJ Overton led the Wildcats with 16 points and Dillon Jones added 12 points in the victory.

With the victory, the Wildcats improved their overall record to 19-8 and 12-4 in the Big Sky Conference. They have kept up the pace in the Big Sky standings with the regular season winding down.

After rebounding with a 65-50 victory over Sacramento State on Thursday, the Weber State Men’s basketball team was looking to keep the positive momentum going with a rematch against Northern Colorado. On Thursday, January 27, 2022, the Wildcats beat Northern Colorado 85-76.

The Wildcats hosted Northern Colorado on Saturday, February 19, 2022. The game was hard fought throughout. After a back and forth first half, the Wildcats went into halftime with a 32-25 lead. In the second half, the Wildcats attempted to pull away, but Northern Colorado wouldn’t go away. Late in the second half, Northern Colorado made a three pointer to send the game into overtime. Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn’t finish the job in overtime, as Northern Colorado earned the 83-79 victory. Despite the loss, Koby McEwen led the Wildcats with 29 points. Dontay Bassett and Dillon Jones each added 13 and 11 points respectively.

With the close loss, the Wildcats’ overall record dropped to 19-9 and 12-5 in the Big Sky Conference. The Wildcats will finish out the regular season with two road games and a home rematch with Southern Utah on March 5, 2022.

Weber State Women’s Basketball

After two tough home losses, the Weber State Women’s Basketball team was looking to turn things around with a road rematch with Sacramento State. The Wildcats beat Sacramento State at home 79-76 on January 29, 2022.

On Thursday, February 17, 2022, the Wildcats played a road game at Sacramento State. After many close games this season that the Wildcats couldn’t win, they showed grit and determination this time around. In the end, the Wildcats finished the job and earned a solid road victory by a final score of 62-52. Kori Pentzer led the Wildcats with 17 points and Daryn Hickok and Emma Torbert each added 16 and 13 points, respectively.

After a much needed victory, the Wildcats played Northern Colorado on Saturday, February 19, 2022. After trailing early, the Wildcats battled back and were able to force overtime. Unfortunately, old mistakes came back to haunt them. In the end, the Wildcats ended up losing another close game, this time by a final score of 60-55 in overtime. Despite the loss, Jadyn Matthews and Daryn Hickok each scored 12 points for the Wildcats and Kori Pentzer added 11 points. With the loss the Wildcat’s overall record dropped to 9-17 and 5-12 in the Big Sky Conference. The Wildcats will finish out the regular season with two more home games and a rematch with Southern Utah on March 4, 2022.
