Region 1 girls soccer returns to action on August 2, 2022. While Syracuse and Davis seem like region favorites, Layton and Weber are both ready for the challenge. With so many storylines heading into the season, it is time to break down each team for the 2022 season.
2021 record: 13-7
Syracuse returns Coach Taylor Allen and All-State performers in seniors Courtney Cobabe, Abby Schofield and Dakota Merino to a team that reached the semi-finals in 2021. The Titans also return sophomore Abby Affleck. Affleck starred as a forward in 2021 scoring 10 goals.
Coach Allen’s coaching philosophy is for his team to play great defense as a team and have a high-powered scoring offense that can score from anywhere on the field and from multiple positions.
2021 record: 14-3
The Darts and Coach Souli Phongsavath had an outstanding 2021 season reaching the Utah’s quarterfinals and winning the Region 1 Championship. Davis returns senior, All-State defender Emily Jacobs and sophomore, Honorable Mention All-State midfielder Brooklyn Phongsavath. The Darts will look to come back from a double-overtime loss to Layton in last year’s playoffs.
2021 record- 9-9
Fremont returns coach Kelly Parke as well as seniors Kya Park and Brooklyn Robinson, both All-State honorable mention players, to a squad that made the second round of the playoffs in 2021. Since 2019, Fremont has a 30-26 record and is looking to become a tough team to beat this year. The Silverwolves started the season 5-0 last year and are looking to have a similar start this coming year beginning with Box Elder on Aug. 2.
2021 record: 13-6
Tara Ferrin and the Lancers finished in 2nd place in 2021 and have beaten the David Darts in their last two meetings. Returning senior defender Morgan Ostrowski will lead the team this year.
As a coach, it is all about “developing team unity,” Ferrin said.
It is important to promote “the values of positivity, integrity, mindfulness, courage, and grit in each player and coach.”
2021 record: 6-11
The Warriors return coach Lei Anne Price, junior all-region performer Callie Price at striker, and senior Ashlynn Stokes as goalkeeper to give the Warriors a run at the region title. The Warriors will be looking to have a winning record for the first time since the 2018 season, hoping to be a threat that could have them playing in the state championship.
For Price, coaching is about, “enjoying the beautiful game, beyond the pitch and into everyday life.”
2021 record: 8-9
Coach Sarah Beecher has high hopes for the Phoenix this year especially with returning junior all-region honorable mention Emmy McKeon, who started as goalkeeper last year. The Phoenixes begin this season with a tough non-region schedule against Westlake, Lone Peak, Corner Canyon, and American Fork. Farmington last won a region title in 2019, going 15-2 in 5A Region 5.
2021 record: 3-13
The Falcons look to turn around a 3-13 record last season with head coach Matthew Kennaley leading. Clearfield will be vying for their first winning season since 2014. The Falcons downed the Weber Warriors at home last year 2-1 as their only region win.
