Region 1 football teams face tough opponents and struggle to find the end zone

Bingham Miners roll past Weber Warriors 42-14

by James Tate | The Miners under first-year head coach Eric Jones used a pounding rushing performance and timely defensive turnovers to cruise past the Warriors to open the season with a 42-14 win.

Jones, former defensive coordinator for the Roy Royals was back to a familiar place in visiting Weber, but this time as a head coach. The Miners Havea Fotu and Carson Sudbury ran for three touchdowns each. The Warriors could not get the ground game going, but senior quarterback Aidan Carter threw for 250 yards and a touchdown toss to Crash Coggins.

Weber freshman wide receiver Salesi Moa led all receivers with 6 catches and 108 yards.

The Warrior’s defense was led by Crash Coggins and Tavin Nye with 8 tackles each.

The young Warriors team will look to improve next week at home vs the American Fork Cavemen, the #3 ranked 6A team per Deseret News. The Miners move to #4 in the 6A rankings.

Layton kicker Taylor Egbert scored 10 of the Lancer’s 16 points in leading the Lancers to the win over Alta.

Skyridge 52 Fremont 7

Fremont senior wide receiver David Calvert had 2 catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. The Silverwolve’s senior linebacker Christian Blanch returned to action with a team-high 13 tackles.

Lehi 48 Davis 0

The Darts junior quarterback Jackson Stevens completed 23 passes and on defense, Damon Brown led with 9 tackles and Carter Dorius had 7 tackles.

Clearfield 0 West 43

The Falcon’s senior cornerback Jaxon Vincent had an interception in the Falcons’ loss.

Syracuse 25 Riverton 27

Syracuse junior quarterback Jake Hopkins threw two touchdown passes and set Syracuse single-game school records with 50 attempts, 32 completions, and 366 yards passing. Running back Kobe Bennett scored a rushing touchdown in the loss.
