Real Salt Lake took a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington. RSL knocked in two key goals and held on to win. RSL remains in fifth place in the Western Conference standings with 37 points and improves to a record of 10-8-7 on the season and 3-6-4 on the road.

First Half

Sounders striker Raúl Ruidíaz got things started for Seattle, taking the first shot of the game. However, he missed by a long shot as he kicked it high. Ruidíaz almost had the Sounders on the board in the 14’ mark, but the video assistant referee determined there was no goal.

After both sides alternated possession for a while, RSL forward Sergio Córdova took a direct shot at goal in the 32’ mark; however, his attempt was deflected by the hand of goalkeeper Stefan Frei. Córdova immediately jumped on the loose ball and drilled it into the bottom left corner of the goal to give RSL a 1-0 lead.

Sounders fullback Nouhou Tolo tried to answer in the 40’ mark but missed to the left. RSL midfielder Jasper Löffelsend attempted another goal a few minutes later but missed high and wide right after a set-piece situation.

Second Half

After misfires by both sides to start the second half, Sounders striker Raúl Ruidíaz almost connected to the bottom left corner. That was until RSL goalkeeper Zac MacMath made the save. However, Albert Rusnák was eventually able to sneak the ball past MacMath into the bottom left corner to tie the game 1-1 in the 54’ mark.

Fortunately for RSL, defender Andrew Brody quickly responded two minutes later with a quick goal in front of a backing Frei to retake the lead 2-1. Following a Jefferson Savarino miss, fullback Aaron Herrera almost knocked goal number three in with another direct shot down the middle, but Frei made the save.

The Sounders never had an answer as they proceeded to miss five shots over the last 21 minutes of the half, including three in the last four minutes. The win was crucial for RSL this was the team’s first outright win in almost a month and second win in the last two months.

Other than shots on goal where RSL led 4-3, they were dominated by the Sounders significantly in almost every category despite taking the win. The Sounders had over double the possession percentage (68.9 percent to 31.1 percent), shots (15-8), and corners (7-0) to name a few. Frei had two saves while MacMath had just one.

RSL will now return home on Saturday, August 20, 2022 to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. The game will begin at 8 p.m. MT and can be streamed on ESPN+ or locally on KMYU. The game can also be streamed on KSLSports.com.
