Weber State Football: Predicting Offensive Starters

Weber State Football: Predicting Offensive Starters

by Tyler Huntington

After taking a look at the defensive side of the ball last week, it is now time to preview the Weber State offense with the season opener just weeks away.

With a stellar defensive core returning, success for this Wildcat team will likely depend on production out of its offense.

At the helm of the offensive unit will be new offensive coordinator Mickey Mental, who was hired from Notre Dame College (DII) last February. Mental has also been tasked with repairing a quarterback room that has struggled in recent years.

It is likely that quarterback Bronson Barren will again take the starter position come week 1 of the regular season. Barren will likely need to take a step forward after a somewhat disappointing 2021 campaign. Subpar play, along with a new offensive coordinator, could be a recipe for fellow quarterbacks Kylan Weisser and Creyton Cooper to receive opportunities sooner rather than later.

The health of the running back group will likely be a major determining factor in the Wildcats offensive production. The group has two all-conference caliber backs in seniors Josh Davis and Kevin Smith Jr. Both players have struggled to stay on the field throughout their collegiate careers.

Experience is lacking in the wide receiver group, with senior Ty MacPherson being the only piece returning who brought in more than 20 catches last year.

Offensive Starters Predictions:

QB: Bronson Barren (SO)

RB: Josh Davis (SR)

WR: Ty MacPherson (SR)

WR: Haze Hadley (JR)

WR: Jon Christensen (JR)

TE: Hayden Meacham (JR)

OL: Noah Atagi (JR)

OL: Ethan Atagi (JR)

OL: Cormac Boyer (SO)

OL: Jordan Lutui (JR)

OL: Meleke Tauteoli (JR)

The Wildcats open their 2022 campaign against a DII opponent Western Oregon on September 1, 2022. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
