Syracuse’s defense and late second-quarter touchdowns highlight the first half
Syracuse started the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by defensive lineman Sam Pula. Pula was penalized for celebrating his touchdown and the Titans were forced to kick off from their 25-yard line. The short kickoff gave the Darts a short field. The Titan’s defense stood strong, and the Darts settled for a Gage Butler 35-yard field goal. After a great kickoff return by the DJ Mayes, kicker Rhett Thompson made a 23-yard field goal to put the Titans up 10-3 with 2:47 left in the first quarter.
The next Darts possession ended with an interception by safety Brevin Hamblin. After both defenses held the offenses in check, Davis gets a 42-yard field goal from Gage Butler to cut the Titan’s lead 10-6. With under 2 minutes left until halftime, Brevin Hamblin took the snap and raced to the end zone for a 46-yard touchdown run. The score and the extra point by Rhett Thompson made the score 17-6. Syracuse used a short kickoff, and the Davis returner dropped the ball and Syracuse recovered. With 35 seconds remaining until halftime, Daxton Faddis scored from 11 yards on a pass from Jake Hopkins for the Titans to make the score 24-6.
Jake Hopkins takes over the third quarter
Hopkins threw touchdown passes to Dylan Croxford and Jake Metcalfe to put the game away in the third quarter. The pass to Croxford covered 32 yards and Metcalfe’s score was from 15 yards out. The Titan’s defense continued to pressure Darts quarterback Jackson Stevens and kept Davis out of the end zone. The third quarter ended with Syracuse up 38-6. The Titans used a 4-yard touchdown run from Josh Burns with 8:26 left in the game to make the score 45-6. A spectacular interception by Tatum Martin gave the Titans the ball back at midfield. With .53 seconds left in the game, Rhett Thompson connected on a 24-yard field goal to make the final score 48-6.
The Darts saw great performances from Gage Butler, Tyson Elkins, Jacob Faerber, and Crew Cunningham.
The Titans defensive front of Pula, Tyson Sweeten, Riggin Hamblin, and Wyatt Pierce kept the Dart’s running game in check and made the game difficult for Stevens to find his receivers. Excellent game by the entire defense to hold Davis without a touchdown.
Syracuse moves to 2-0 in the region and 4-2 overall, and Davis is now 1-1 in the region and 3-3 overall.
