Bingham Outlasts Lone Peak in a Back and Forth Brawl

The #3 Bingham Miners hosted the #11 Lone Peak Knights in 6A UHSAA Football Quarterfinals Friday night.

First Half

The first half was all about defense as both offenses struggled to find continuity.

Lone Peak struck first with a couple of field goals (one from 55 yards), to give them a 6-0 for most of the first half. Bingham’s excellent execution late in the first half helped them find pay dirt late to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Bingham QB Dallen Martinez and WR Carson Sudbury were huge on their first scoring drive of the game. It’s been that story all year long as they’ve led the Bingham offense.

Second Half

Both offenses adjusted and got rolling in the second half. Lone Peak found the endzone for the first time with a QB Kaden Hodson finding WR Crew McChesney to give them a 12-7 lead after a failed two-point try.

Bingham answered with a touchdown from Sudbury on a big third down, and then got two more thanks to a great screen play to RB Havea Fotu to make it 15-12.

Lone Peak answered the bell once again, this time it was Hodson that found the endzone on a QB sneak. The Knights took the point after this time around to make it a 19-15 affair to start the fourth quarter.

Bingham methodically drove the field and answered with yet another touchdown as both defenses continued searching for answers. Bingham went back to a screen to Fotu to find the endzone to put Bingham back on top 22-19.

After a couple stops on both ends, the Knights found themselves with the ball and 2 minutes to ago. A huge play on 4th and 9 Hodson found McChensey for fifty yards into Bingham territory.

After a few good plays they found themselves inside the ten with a chance to take a late lead. The game would come down to one play, with Bingham ultimately getting a stop on fourth down, as the pass from Hodson to Bateman was broken up.

Bingham took over and assumed victory formation, punching their ticket to Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Miners advance with the win and will take on the Skyridge Falcons on Friday November 11 at 2:30 P.M. MT.
