Vikings sharp shooting first half
The Vikings opened the game leading 26-9 after the first period. Senior, Maren Jones led the way for the Vikings scoring 10 points in the first quarter. Jones finished with a game-high 24 points to lead all scorers.
The second quarter saw the Vikings add constant ball pressure on the Lancers and forced multiple turnovers. The Lancer turnovers led to easy fast break points for the Vikings. The Lancers took advantage of the aggressive Viking defense and forced them to commit shooting fouls. Senior Charly Stevens and junior Jocelyn Martinez combined to shoot six of eight from the free-throw line. At halftime, the score had the Vikings leading 39-21.
Second-half defense carries the Vikings
The Vikings came out with full-court pressure by Jones, and seniors Lucy Miller and Mia Reeves to force the Lancers into rushed shots. Rebounding was key to limiting the Lancers to one shot in the third quarter as Jones scored 10 more points for the Vikings. The third quarter ended with the Vikings only giving up a Martinez three-pointer for a 55-24 lead.
The fourth quarter saw the Lancers begin to display their full-court pressure and forced the Vikings into turnovers. The Lancers scored 15 points in the quarter, but could not make the game close. The Vikings finished with a strong quarter and 18 points for a final score of 73-39.
The Lancers had a balanced scoring attack led by Martinez’s eight points. Stevens, senior Brenley Boydston, and junior Olivia Hodapp each finished with seven points.
Pleasant Grove’s other player in double figures was freshman Tabi Clark with 10 points. The Vikings ended the game with eight made three-point baskets.
