CEDAR CITY, Utah — Dating back to last season, Stephen F Austin had won 15 straight conference games. However, that streak came to an end at the hands of Southern Utah Saturday afternoon. The Thunderbirds swept a massive two game homestand that has cemented Todd Simon’s team as contenders in the WAC. Sam Houston and SFA got a lesson from the Thunderbirds on the difficulty of winning on the road.

How It Happened

Three Thunderbirds scored in double figures. Maizen Fausett was once again the team’s scoring leader with 19. Jason Spurgin had 15 points while Tevian Jones scored 13. Cameron Healy came off the bench for 9 and continued to show while he will threaten to start in the future. SUU lost the battle in three-point and free throw percentage, but the defense shined. SUU had four blocks to SFA’s zero. A team that has largely built its reputation of offense this season showed it can play great defense when it needs to. No Lumberjack player scored more than 11.

On Deck

SUU goes for the season sweep of New Mexico State on Thursday night. The Aggies, in their final season in the WAC have been a major disappointment sitting at 0-6 in WAC play. Taking care of business will be crucial as another huge game looms next Saturday. The Thunderbirds will travel to Seattle to take on Seattle University. The Redhawks became the only team undefeated in conference play after knocking off Utah Valley on Saturday.
