Weber State Sacramento State Recap

The Weber State Wildcats continue to spiral as their losing streak reaches 11 after a blowout loss to the Sacramento State Hornets. The ‘Cats continue to search for the ever-elusive first conference win, dropping to 0-7 against Big Sky opponents and 4-15 on the year. On the other hand, the Hornets continue to impress, staying atop the conference at 6-1 with a 15-3 overall record.

Team Leaders

Daryn Hickok was the primary scoring option for Weber State on the day. Her 20 points led the team and nearly accounted for half of the points for this offense. She shot 7-17 from the field, adding four rebounds to her line. Jadyn Matthews was the only other Weber State starter to score more than two points in the contest, scrounging together a nine-point performance. She hit two of her three attempts from range but went 0-6 from anywhere else on the court.

Kahlaija Dean and Isnelle Natabou were the stories of the day for the Hornets. Dean’s offensive outburst was one for the ages, shooting 10-13 from the field and an insane 6-7 from three. She couldn’t be slowed down on her way to 31 points. Natabou was a threat on both sides of the ball. Her 17 points were good for second on her team, but her 18 rebounds were dominant. With her impressive double-double, she nearly matched the entire Wildcats’ team total for rebounds.

Dominated

This game felt like it was over before it started. The ‘Cats just couldn’t get anything going, and they couldn’t seem to stop Sacramento State’s offense. Weber State couldn’t find their rhythm, shooting 28.3% from the field to the 48.9% of the Hornets. They were held to 12 points or less each quarter and were jostled around all day. The Wildcats were outrebounded 38-22, having a hard time asserting themselves and imposing their will.

Going on the road against the conference’s top team was always going to end in disaster for a roster looking to snag their first win since the beginning of December, especially given Weber State’s struggles on the road all season, 1-10 away from home.

A Couple of Positives

While there wasn’t much to walk away happy with, the ‘Cats did force 20 turnovers on the night, winning the battle 20-18. Although the turnover numbers are still a point of improvement, they did turn it over less than their season average of 19.1 per game. They also shot 40% from three on their ten shots.

It isn’t a lot to work off of, but as a team looking to get back in the win column, any positives need to be highlighted and taken advantage of moving forward.

What’s to Come

The ‘Cats will return to the Dee Events Center Thursday to face Idaho in a game where both teams are on long losing streaks.
