PHOENIX — It may not have been the splatter that Southern Utah’s most recent 4th quarter was, but it proved to be the difference yet again. Daylani Ballena was the scoring leader with 15 points. Facing a nine-point deficit midway through the 3rd quarter and an eight-point hole to start the 4th, the Thunderbirds continued to fight. Only with 44 seconds left in the game did SUU take its first lead since the 2nd quarter.

Straight Off the Bench

Tomekia Whitman came off the bench for 14 points. Prior to Wednesday night, she only had 11 points combined in all of her outings dating back to November 9th. She also scored those 14 points in just 21 minutes of playing time. She went a perfect 8 for 8 on free throw attempts none bigger than two makes with four seconds left. That provided a 63-58 Thunderbird lead to ice the game. GCU made one last basket as time expired for a 63-60 final score.
