EDINBURG, Texas — Ever since WAC play began, Southern Utah has done nothing but make history. The 8-0 start to WAC play is more than just the program’s best start to conference play ever. The eight-game win streak is also the longest win streak in the history of SUU women’s basketball. That will be on the line in two tough road games starting with a Saturday afternoon tilt at UT-Rio Grande Valley.
Wacky Weather
WACky weather in the state of Texas forced the postponement of multiple games in the past week. That included the game against UT-Arlington originally scheduled for Thursday. The game was moved to Monday and will now be the back half of this Texas road trip for the Thunderbirds.
Just Keep Fighting
After the postponement of Thursday’s game, it has now been a week since SUU last saw the court. In that outing, the Thunderbirds emerged victorious against another team from the Lone Star State. SUU ground out a 55-48 victory over Tarleton State. None of SUU’s last four wins have come easy. Three of the last four games were decided by single digits. The lone exception was the 62-51 win at Utah Tech two weeks ago in which SUU outscored the Trailblazers 17-2 in the fourth quarter.
Scouting the Vaqueros
UT-Rio Grande Valley currently sits at 8-12 overall and 2-7 in WAC play. The Vaqueros just snapped a five-game losing streak with a 69-65 win over Utah Tech on Thursday. That built some momentum for UTRGV and the Thunderbirds will need to be prepared for yet another tough battle. Four Vaqueros were in double figures in the win including two that made the effort off the bench.
