High school boys basketball: Brevin Hamblin shines for the Syracuse Titans in a region 1 win over the Farmington Phoenix 60-55

First quarter

It was senior night for the Titans basketball team, and after the flowers and pictures, senior Brevin Hamblin went to work. Hamblin scored 11 first-quarter points to ignite the Titans. After Hamblin scored on a three-point basket and layup, the Titans led 11-4 with 4:05 left in the first quarter. With Hamblin’s hot start, the Phoenix were only down two points, 13-11, at the end of the quarter. Senior Paul Beattie scored on two jump shots, and senior Jayden Haskell scored a three-point basket with 25 seconds on the clock.

Second quarter

The start of the second quarter saw Haskell give the Phoenix the lead of 14-13 with a three-point shot. Titans leading scorer Kaden Ericksen was scoreless in the first quarter but quickly answered with a three-pointer to put the Titans back in from 16-14 with 7:30 on the clock. One of the area’s most underrated players is Farmington’s point guard Cole Johnson. He made two jump shots in the quarter to help the Phoenix keep pace with Hamblin and the Titans. The halftime score was 24-22, a slim lead for the Titans. The Phoenix’s Haskell led the team in scoring with eight points. Hamblin paced the Titans with 17 points at the break.

Third quarter

Farmington’s Johnson was the team’s leading scorer in the third quarter with seven points. Johnson made two difficult layups and a three-point basket. Hamblin continued to dominate inside and outside for the Titans. He also scored seven points to lead the Titans with two layups and a three-point basket. The third period ended with Titans senior point guard Kane King assisting Hamblin on a last-second layup to give the Titans the lead at 41-36.

Fourth quarter

After a quiet first three quarters, Ericksen started to close the game for the Titans. He made a three-point shot with 4:13 left in the game for a 46-38 score in favor of the Titans. Beattie responded with a jumper to cut the lead to 46-40. After a timeout, King and Ericksen made layups to put the Titans up by ten, 50-40, with 2:54 remaining.

With 1:37 left in the game, Haskell scored on a three-point shot for the Phoenix to make the score 53-48 Titans. The Phoenix’s rallied to cut the Titan’s lead down to two points after Haskell made a three-point basket and stole the ball on the next possession. Beattie made a layup, and the score was 57-55 Titans with 24 seconds left. Ericksen and Hamblin closed out the game with made free throws for a 60-55 final score.

Outstanding performances

Hamblin played on a different level, leading all scorers with 27 points. Ericksen poured in a steady 16 points for the Titans. King and seniors Dax Brady and Carter Semrow played excellent defense.

Farmington’s Haskell led the team with 19 points. Johnson scored 17, and Beattie chipped in 14 for the Phoenix.
