High school boys basketball: Fremont Silverwolves clinch 2023 Region 1 title with blowout victory over the Davis Darts 67-45

David Calvert starts fast in the first quarter

In a packed Wolf Den gymnasium at Fremont High School, the Silverwolves took care of the Davis Darts and captured the region one title. On senior night for the Silverwolves, senior David Calvert started the first quarter strong by scoring seven points and leading Fremont to a 15-7 lead.

Hunter Hansen takes over in the second quarter

The second quarter saw the Silverwolves explode for a 21-7 run behind Hansen’s two three-point baskets and six points from senior forward Christian Blanch. “We were being super unselfish and sharing the ball,” said Hansen about the first-half performance. “Just being excited for each other.” The second quarter saw five Fremont players score, Blanch, Hansen, Calvert, Boston Hadley, and Braden Flinders. Hansen, a Utah State University commit, drained an incredible three-pointer at the buzzer to end the second quarter.

The Darts came into the game with four players averaging 10 points per game or more this season. Senior guard Colby Whicker was out, and seniors Kaden Eggett and Zach Fisher combined for only four points. Hansen drained a last-second three-point basket at the buzzer to end the first half with the Silverwolves leading 36-14.

Silverwolves go up by 25 in the third quarter

Hansen came out at the start of the third quarter and picked up where he left off by scoring, this time a layup, giving Fremont a 38-14 lead. Eggett then made a three-point shot for the Darts. Hansen scored six points in the quarter to lead the Silverwolves. Junior Caleb Taylor led the Darts with two three-pointers and six points. By the end of the third quarter, Fremont had a 47-29 lead.

Boston Hadley time in the fourth quarter

Fremont’s Hadley made three of his game-high four three-point shots in the fourth quarter. Hadley totaled 12 points, and the Silverwolves had the game in command throughout the quarter. Fisher and senior Coleman Atwater led the Darts in scoring with seven points each in the fourth quarter. The game ended with a 67-45 score, and the Silverwolves celebrated being the 2023 Region 1 Champion.

Outstanding performances

Hansen scored 19 points for the Silverwolves, followed by 15 points from Hadley. Calvert ended the game with 13 points. The Silverwolves will now look towards the state playoffs and a high seed from the MaxPreps RPI. “We are not done yet,” said Hansen. “We are ready for state now.” “We are excited about the playoffs now,” said Hansen. ” Hoping that we get to Weber State.”

The Darts were led in scoring by Fisher’s 10 points, and Atwater and Taylor chipped in nine points each.
