CEDAR CITY, Utah — When Southern Utah hosts California Baptist on Tuesday night, they will have an opportunity to make history. At least a share of the WAC regular season title can be clinched with a victory. With a win Tuesday night and a win Thursday night against Grand Canyon, the Thunderbirds can be outright champions. It won’t be easy, however. SUU will have its hands full against two of the WAC’s best teams. The Lancers and Antelopes sit at 3rd and 4th in the conference standings respectively.
Last Time Out
SUU got everything it could handle in a road game at Tarleton. The Texans took the Thunderbirds to overtime, but SUU was able to avoid a second consecutive loss in the extra period. The Thunderbirds escaped with an 80-78 win thanks in part to a 23-point performance by Tomekia Whitman. Daylani Ballena has 22 and Samantha Johnston had 16 as SUU completed the season sweep of the Texans.
High School Days
With a majority of SUU students out of town for Spring Break, attendance is likely to be low. The Thunderbirds have turned to the local high schools to fill some seats. Students at Cedar and Canyon View High Schools get into the game for free with a student ID. Can some of the void left by a low student turnout be filled by students at the local high schools?
Know Your Opponent
Trinity San Antonio is a scoring machine for Cal Baptist. She has hit double figures in five straight games all of which the Lancers have won. She also recorded a triple-double in her most recent outing on Saturday; a 75-71 win over Utah Tech. With 17 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists, the Thunderbirds will have their hands full with her. Grace Schmidt also notched a double-double in that game against the Trailblazers with 15 points and 10 rebounds. This Cal Baptist team can truly do it all and SUU will have to be ready if it wants to zap the Lancers off their horses.
