CEDAR CITY, Utah — Just two days after wrapping up a share of the WAC regular season title, Southern Utah has one more step they’d like to take. On Thursday, the Thunderbirds can win the WAC outright with a win or a little help. Even with a loss to GCU, SUU could still be outright WAC champions if Stephen F Austin stumbles at UT-Arlington. Of course, the Thunderbirds should not cheer for that help and instead handle their own business.

Last Time Out

In front of a small America First Event Center crowd, SUU had a major celebration. In its inaugural WAC campaign, the Thunderbirds are a champion. It may not mean being the 1 seed in the WAC Tournament, but history was made. Tomekia Whitman’s 25 points off the bench were the story of the game. Other highlights include Lizzy Willamson’s tenth double-double on the year and a 17-point effort from Megan Jensen.

No Lopes Allowed

Grand Canyon is the only thing standing in the way of an outright regular-season title. These two teams played a 63-60 thriller when they met in Phoenix back in January. In the regular season finale for both teams, another classic should be expected. The Thunderbirds have built their reputation on winning close games this season. A win here to complete a season sweep of a quality GCU team would go a long way in taking some momentum into the WAC tournament.
