CEDAR CITY, Utah — Just two days after a stunning home loss to Grand Canyon, Southern Utah rebounded in a big way. The Thunderbirds defeated California Baptist 81-71 on their senior night. In doing so, they completed the season sweep of the Lancers and snapped a two-game skid. In addition, Todd Simon secured his 3rd straight 20-win season. Now, it’s on to the WAC tournament where SUU will most likely have the 4 seed in the resume seeding system having finished 3rd in the conference standings. Three starting seniors played their final game in Cedar City and four starters scored in double figures in the win.
One Last Ride
Maizen Fausett’s final home game could not have gone better. He became only the third Thunderbird to surpass 1500 career points in his 12-point effort Friday night. Jason Spurgin led the scoring with 20 points and right behind him was Drake Allen with 15 as well as 8 assists. Harrison Butler had 11 points in his home finale while Tevian Jones went for 9 on his senior night. Dee Barnes and Cameron Healy both came off the bench for 6 points apiece. Additionally, CBU’s Armstrong brothers were much more defended this time around. Taran Armstrong was limited to 8 points while Tre Armstrong was held to only 2. Riley Battin led the Lancers in scoring with 19 points.
Up Next
The WAC tournament in Las Vegas is up next. With a first-round bye wrapped up, the Thunderbirds look set to begin play on Thursday. SUU passed Seattle U for the 3 seeds in the seeding system. This means that they will open the WAC tourney play against the winner of the 6-11 first-round game. That will either be against sixth-seeded Stephen F Austin or eleventh-seeded rival Utah Tech.
