High school track and field: 2023 Davis Invitational track meet recap

The Davis Invitational track meet is one of the state’s most competitive, with over 47 schools and 4,000 athletes competing. Davis High School has an outstanding reputation for having one of the most organized meets of the year. Excellent performances by several great athletes resulted in another successful meet.

Boy’s sprint events

Gabe Remy of West Jordan High School won the 100m and 200m events. Remy’s winning time in the 100m was 10.78, tying his personal best. Second place was Woods Cross High School junior Daniel Chase in 10.95. Finishing in third place was Evanston High School (WY) junior Gabe Hutchinson in 11.13. Remy won the 200m event in a personal best time of 21.75. Roy High School senior Colby Anderson finished second, with a personal best time of 21.88. Northridge High School senior Mason Obray crossed the line in third place in 21.92.

Tate Walker of Green Canyon High School took first place in the 400m event in 48.34, a personal best time. Anderson finished second in 48.48. Ridgeline High School senior Brock Parson was third in 49.18.

Open division

Walker won the 100m event in 11.17. Caleb Zito of Cyprus High School finished second in 11.19. Roy junior Cole West was third in 11.30. The 400m event saw Woods Cross sophomore Grant Nelson win in 50.28. Hillcrest High School junior Josiah Gonzales finished second in 50.57. Third place finisher was Summit Academy senior Bryson Ottley in 51.28.

Box Elder senior Jackson Kuchinski won the 200m event in 22.46. Second place was Green Canyon’s Joseph Brough in a time of 22.74. Crossing the line in third place was Nelson from Wood Cross in 22.83.

Boy’s hurdle events

Weber High School freshman Josh Hamblin won the 110m hurdles event in 14.69, the fastest time in 6A this year. Second place went to Layton Christian Academy senior Malik Johnson in 14.91. Finishing third was Layton High School senior Chad Leon in 15.10. Johnson was able to come back and capture the 300mh event in 38.84, a personal best. Hamblin was second in a personal best time of 39.33. Third place went to Farmington High School senior Tanner Crosland in 39.55, a personal best time.

Open division

West Side High School senior Brennon Winward won the 110m hurdles in 15.56. Copper Hills High School junior Caleb Steele finished second in 15.62. Crossing the line in third place was West Jordan High School senior Jordan Asay in 15.83. Davis sophomore Caleb Flint won the 300m hurdles event in a time of 40.42. Mountain Crest High School junior Steven Hadfield finished second in 40.63. Evanston High School (WY) junior Kai Barker crossed the line in third place with a time of 40.95.

Girl’s sprint events

Fremont High School senior Amare Harlan set a new state record in winning the 100m event in 11.51. Harlan held the previous record of 11.58 set last year. Second place went to Mountain Ridge High School sophomore Kinzlee Riddle in 12.45. Finishing in third place was Rich High School junior Violett Taylor in a personal best 12.52. No state record in the 200m, but Harlan took first place in 24.07. Morgan High School senior Lucy Tripp was second in a 3A season-best time of 25.53. Crossing the line in a close third place was Hunter High School junior Dakota Peyton in 25.55.

Peyton captured the victory in the 400m event in 56.20, a 6A season best and personal best time. Weber junior Annalise Ririe was second in 56.57, a personal best time. Third place finisher was Morgan’s senior Grace Gordon in 57.66, a 3A season-best time.

Open division

Peyton won the 100m open event in 12.67. Davis High School sophomore Aubree Hardy edged out Green Canyon senior Cambree Tensmeyer for second place. Hardy finished in 12.91, and Tensmeyer crossed the line in 12.92. Mountain Ridge’s Riddle won the 400m event in 57.29. Finishing second was Tensmeyer of Green Canyon in 59.39. Third place finisher was West High School senior Emerald Kehr in 59.82.

The 200m event saw Green Canyon junior Kylee Cox win in 26.36. Viewmont High School sophomore Alexis Toronto finished second in 26.49. Third-place finisher Gordon of Morgan crossed the line in 26.54.

Girl’s hurdle events

Weber High School senior Eden DeVries clocked an impressive 14.15 in the 100m hurdles to win the invited section. DeVries notched a personal best which is also the best time in the state so far this season. Taylor of Rich High School was second in a personal best of 15.05, and third place went to Box Elder’s Sarena Mackley in 15.23. DeVries completed the double with a victory in the 300m hurdles in a personal best time of 44.42. Taylor was a close second in a personal best of 44.52. Mountain View High School (WY) junior Jaylee Antonino finished third in 45.31.

Morgan senior Rhett Nye won the javelin event with a throw of 166’03”. Nye’s throw is the best in 3A this season. Layton High School senior Tyler Poole captured the win in the discus and shot-put events. Poole’s winning throws were 178′ in the discus and 57’10 in the shot put.

Orem High School senior Jackson Merrill won the pole vault event with a vault of 15’06”, a personal best and tops in the state this season. West Jordan junior Dominic Overby won the long jump with a jump of 22’09”. Overby is the state’s top long jumper this year. The high jump winner was Northridge junior Logan Gillian, clearing 6’05”.

Open division

Riverton High School junior Gavin Trickett won the boy’s high jump event, clearing 6’1″. Box Elder High School junior Nathan Pugsley was second by clearing 5’10”. Lyman High School (WY) took first and second place in the discus event. Senior Braydon Bradshaw was first with a throw of 144’05″. Sophomore Max Gregory was second with a throw of 135’05″. Davis High School sophomore Ben Brown was third, with a throw of 129’09”.

Davis junior Jake Sorensen won the pole vault event by clearing a height of 13’01”. Second place was Fremont junior Jesse Haws, clearing 12’09”. Third place went to Sorensen’s teammate senior Joey Overfelt, clearing 12’03”.

Girl’s field events

St. Joseph High School senior Sarah Snell won the javelin event with a throw of 129’04”. Snell is the state’s top javelin thrower and defending 2A champion. Second place went to Green Canyon senior Maren McKenna with a throw of 124’10”. McKenna’s throw is the best in 4A this season. Layton sophomore Berklie Burton captured first place in the discus event with a personal best throw of 123’11”. Green Canyon senior Abigal Blau won the shot-put event with a winning throw of 40’05”. Blau is ranked number one in state in the event this season.

Hillcrest High School junior Anna Ames won the pole vault event with a vault of 11’03”. Davis junior Loryn Helgesen won the high jump event, clearing 5’07”. Harlan of Fremont won the long jump event with a jump of 18’06.5″.

Open division

The girl’s long jump event saw Riverton junior Gabriella Fenn win the vent with a leap of 16’0″. Second place was Box Elder sophomore Nataya Valenzuela with a 1’08.5″ jump. Third place went to Fremont High School sophomore Haylee John with a 15’7″ jump. The high jump event was won by Ridgeline High School sophomore Abby Bodily, clearing 5’0″.

The girl’s pole vault event saw Mountain View High School junior Mylie Micheli clear 10’06” and win. Second place went to Corner Canyon High School senior Clara Hazar, clearing 10’3″. Third place finisher was Riverton senior Abbie Wilson, clearing 9’03”.
