High school track and field: 2024 Davis Invitational recap

The Davis Invitational track meet is one of the state’s most popular, with over 40 schools and 1200 athletes competing. Davis High School has an outstanding reputation for having one of the best-organized meets of the year, and 2024 was no different. Excellent performances, including state and school records from great athletes, led to another successful meet. The meet broke down into the open division in the morning and the invited division in the afternoon for kids with higher seed times and qualifying marks.

Boys sprint events

Dominic Overby of West Jordan High School won the 100m and 400m events. Overby’s winning time in the 100m was 10.68, setting a personal best and top in the state time. Second place was Corner Canyon High School junior Jerome Myles in 10.69. Finishing in third place was Alta High School sophomore Evan Morton in 10.83.

In the 200m event, Myles bounced back to win in 21.30. Morton came in second in 21.69, and Myles’ teammate, senior Tate Kjar, came in third in 21.99. Overby won the 400m event in a new state record time of 47.08, ahead of Kjar who finished in 48.03. Finishing third was Morgan High School senior Brogan Garrett in 48.40.  

Open division

Daniel Chase of Woods Cross High School won the 100m event in 11.04. Vance Jeppson of Clearfield High School finished second in 11.12. Corner Canyon High School junior Bryton Brady took third in 11.13. 

In the 400m event, sophomore Mason Hamilton of Corner Canyon won 48.38. Evanston (WY) High School junior Ayden Hartzell finished second in 48.89. Woods Cross junior Grant Nelson finished third in 48.93.

Hartzell won the 200m open division event in 21.99. Bonneville High School senior Davis DeGroot came in second at 22.15. Bode Jensen, a senior from Farmington High School, crossed the line in third at 22.16.

Boy’s hurdle events

Invited division

The boys’ hurdle events look to be the beginning of Weber High School sophomore Josh Hamblin’s dominance of the 110mh and 300mh. Hamblin is the defending 6A state champion in the 110mh and made it look easy by winning the Davis Invitational event in 14.22. Fellow Region 1 competitor Caleb Flint of Davis High School finished second in 14.82. Evanston (WY) senior Kai Barker was third in 15.33. 

In the 300mh hurdle race, Hamblin put on a show with a new state record performance in 37.04. Flint was second in 39.54, and Shane Farley of Weber was third in 39.89.

Open division

Corner Canyon senior Brock Hobson won the 110mh event in 15.89. Hunter High School senior Griffin Gallagher finished second in 15.94. Syracuse High School junior Bradley Floyd 16.03 crossed the line in third place. 

Barker won the 300mh open event in 40.67. Clearfield High School emerging star Caleb Miyamoto finished second in 40.78. Evanston High School (WY) junior Kai Barker crossed the line in third place with a time of 40.95.

Girls sprint events

Invited division

Corner Canyon junior Liberty Henstrom took home first place and the coveted championship belt in the 100m event in 12.28. Second place went to Stansbury High School senior Brenly Douglas in 12.33. Finishing third was Evanston (WY) senior Talia Conrad in 12.55. In the 200m event, Morgan Carter of Park City High School finished first in 24.97. Corner Canyon sophomore Makiah Turner was second in 25.31, just edging out third-place finisher Macey Rockwood of Alta in 25.33.

Carter completed the 200m-400m sweep by winning the 400m event in 56.45. Annalise Ririe of Weber finished second in 56.71. Third place went to Carter’s teammate Sierra Darling in 57.55.

Open division

Sophomores captured the top two spots in the girl’s open division 100m event, with Macey Rockwood of Alta in first place and Sadie Fletcher of Weber in second. Rockwoods’ time was 12.95, and Fletcher was close at 12.99. Third place went to Violet Taylor of Rich High School in 13.07.

Sabrina Hubbel of Woods Cross High School won the 200m event in 25.63. Ririe of Weber was second in 25.91, and Lexi Toronto of Viewmont High School captured third place in 26.00. In the 400m event, Olympus High School senior Whitney Fisher won in 58.43. Evanston (WY) Talia Conrad was second in 58.95, and Box Elder High School sophomore Kaylan Anderson took third in 59.66.

Girl’s hurdle events

Violet Taylor from Rich High School captured the 100mh event in the invited section in 14.73. Mountain View (WY) High School senior Jaylee Antonino finished second in 14.80. Turner from Corner Canyon placed third in 15.24.

In the 300mh hurdle event, Taylor completed the double by winning in 44.07. Antonino was second in 44.89, and Layton High School senior Janika Seegmiller was third in 45.41.

Open division

Davis High School senior Aubrey Rowe pleased the home crowd with a first-place finish in the open division 100mh in 16.85. Kate Glazier of Lehi High School was second in 16.90. Fremont High School junior Aubrey Ostler crossed the line in third place in 16.92

Lily Weaver of Clearfield High School won first place in the 300mh open division in 46.71. Weaver’s teammate, junior Danica Fox, finished second in 47.23. Evanston (WY) sophomore Emma Lonsaway finished third in 47.59.

Jace Cook Syracuse High School

Boys field events

Championship belts made by Salt City Swagger were presented to the first-place finishers in the shot put and high jump field events. Syracuse High School freshman Jace Cook took home first place and the belt with a winning throw of 59’1.5″. Mountain Ridge High School senior Adam Hawkes won the discus event with a throw of 178’5″. Copper Hills High School junior Keaton Peery captured the javelin title with a throw of 177’7″.

The boys invited section of the long jump event saw Weber High School Hamblin brothers finish first and second. Josh had a winning leap of 22’6″, and Jacob was next with a leap of 21’7″. Barker of Evanston (WY) won the high jump event, clearing 6’7″. Syracuse High School senior Samuel Price finished on top in the pole vault event by clearing 15’6″.

Open division

The open division saw Copper Hills junior Joakim Green win the shot put event with a throw of 46’11”. Woods Cross High School senior Clarence Pututau won the discus event with a throw of 132’8″. Kaden Wheeler of Box Elder High School won the javelin event by throwing 142’11”.

Ridgeline High School sophomore Cooper Clark won the open division long jump event with a leap of 20’6.5″. Davis High School junior Jona Helbig won the high jump title by clearing 6’3″. Corner Canyon junior Aidan Springer finished on top in the pole vault event by clearing 12′.

Girl’s field events

Invited division

The highlight of the field events was Weber High School Cami Cvitkovich’s setting a new state record by clearing 5’10.25″ in the high jump. Syracuse senior Cortnie Barker finished second to Cvitkovich in the high jump, but was on top in the long jump with a leap of 16’10.5″. 

Layton High School junior Burklie Burton won the discus event with a throw of 134′. Carly Trujillo of Mountain Ridge won the shot put event with a throw of 38’5″. Box Elder senior Hallie Reeder won the javelin event with a throw of 113’1″. Gabriella Fenn of Riverton High School took home first place in the pole vault event by clearing 12’3″.

Open division

Burton’s teammate, sophomore Princess Faeamani, won the open division discus event with a throw of 111’9″. Box Elder High School junior Adahleigh Anderson took first place in the shot put event with a throw of 35′.5″. Ogden High School senior Erika Hains was first in the javelin event with a winning throw of 100’9″.

Boy’s distance events

Invited division

A close finish in the boy’s 800m event saw Morgan High School senior Tucker Giles edge out Weston Egnew of Viewmont by .20. Egnew’s winning time was 1:54.37, and Egnew finished in 1:54.57. Pleasant Grove senior Zach Hillhouse captured the championship belt with his win in the 1600m event. Hillhouse’s winning time was 4:12.25. Woods Cross senior Brady Christensen won the 3200m event in 9:24.63.

Open division

Corner Canyon junior Phin Mayer took an early lead in the boy’s open division 800m event and won in 1:58.01. Northridge junior Eric Greding won the 1600m event in 4:26.96, and Hayden Arbuckle of Viewmont won the 3200m race in 9:43.26.

Girl’s distance events

Northridge High School senior Charlotte Wilkinson won first place in the invited division 800m run in 2:16.61. Evanston (WY) senior Jocelyn Capener finished second in 2:17.05, and Fremont High School junior Brecklyn Bugnet came in third in 2:17.29. Cailey Bracken of Mountain Ridge won the 1600m event and the championship belt in 5:04.49. Davis High School senior Angelina Lione was second in 5:06.01, and Farmington junior Skye Siddoway finished third in 5:11.37.

Bracken would be a double winner, capturing the 3200m event in 11:00.30. Siddoway was second in 11:13.24, and Alexis Bradshaw of Farmington finished in third place in 11:15.65.

Open division

Woods Cross sophomore Brie Nydegger finished first in the open division 800m event in 2:23.34. Kennedy Hadley of Syracuse was second in 2:24.69, and Nydegger’s teammate Kiara DeVries crossed the line in third place in 2:25.23. Ogden High School freshman Clara Geddes won the open division 1600m in 5:21.28. Jessica Wilson of Pleasant Grove was second in 5:21.95, and finishing third was Julia Rust of Alta in 5:25.30.

Geddes also took home first place in the 3200m event in 12:16.78. Cambrie Babcock was second in 12:17.38, and finishing third was Hillcrest High School senior Edith Nelsen in 12:24.55.
