Softball preview: Davis Darts

Davis Darts

2024 overall and region record (19-7) (8-2)

Head coach: Todd Street

Region 1 co-champion Davis Darts are ready to defend their title with the return of numerous players led by Standard-Examiner All-Area MVP Serena Roth. Roth, a junior, finished the 2024 season with a 14-2 record and 117 strikeouts in the circle. According to the Max Preps final rankings, the Darts finished last season ranked sixth in 6A and look forward to the battle in Region 1.

“We hope to repeat as region champions, that is something that has never happened at Davis High in softball,” Head Coach Todd Street said. “It’s not easy to win, it’s hard to win championships, so, we need to work harder this year if we want to win.”

Returning with Roth will be All-Area First-Team shortstop Jewel Korth, Second-Team All-Region first baseman Katie Klaumann, and Second-Team All-Region pitcher/outfielder Cambell Christensen. Korth, a junior, is a dynamic shortstop with a great range, strong arm, and a great hitter at the plate. Korth batted .373 and led the region with 37 runs batted in last year. Klaumann sported a .291 batting average with 23 hits last season. In the field, Klaumann showcases her excellent footwork in handling balls in the dirt and quick reactions to get outs. Klaumann has the talent to step into the circle and deliver as a pitcher for the Darts if needed, and she has committed to continue her education and playing softball at Mt. Hood Community College.

Christensen was a “closer” last season, getting crucial outs for the Darts and recording four saves and 47 strikeouts. Christensen and Roth are among the top pitching combinations in the state. Returning senior third baseman Hadlee Isaacs is athletic, confident, and has an accurate, strong arm to make throws to all bases. Look for a big year from Isaacs, a career .318 hitter from the plate and led the team with 12 stolen bases last season.

Junior Riley Jaques is a newcomer to watch this season for the Darts. Jaques batted .345 at Layton High School last year and played solid as a catcher and infielder.

Replacing talented departed players from last year’s championship team will be a challenge for the Darts as they look to make a deeper playoff run.

“We lost some very talented fielders from last year,” coach Street said.  “They will be tough to replace, however, we are hopeful that we will improve in the field throughout the year and be stronger at the plate.”
