2025 Record: Overall (7-5) Region (3-3)

The West Field Longhorns enter the 2026 season with confidence, experience, and a clear identity as they begin year three under Head Coach Eric Jones. Last season, their first competing at the 5A level, the Longhorns finished 7–5 and reached the second round of the state playoffs. A five‑game midseason win streak proved they could compete with the classification’s best, and the returning talent across the roster positions them as one of the most complete teams in the region.

The offense is built around one of the most dangerous passing combinations in Utah high school football. Senior receiver Gavin Ortegon, a 2025 Deseret News First Team All‑State selection, returns as the Longhorns’ premier playmaker. His connection with junior standout quarterback Easton Eilertson gives West Field a proven foundation capable of stretching defenses vertically and horizontally. Their chemistry, timing, and ability to take over games make them the centerpiece of the Longhorns’ offensive identity.

A prolific combination last year, Ortegon made 80 catches for 1,266 yards and 18 touchdowns. Eilertson was outstanding, passing for 3,218 yards and 39 touchdowns. Eilertson is gaining attention from colleges and is a leader, ready to elevate his game and the Longhorns.

Gavin Ortegon

When defenses commit extra attention to Ortegon, West Field has the personnel to respond. Senior running back Elijah Woods, who rushed for 532 yards last season, has taken a major step forward during the offseason and looks ready for a heavy workload. His blend of power, vision, and receiving ability makes him a versatile threat who can punish defenses that overcommit to stopping the pass. Senior Caden Judy returns as well after adding 286 yards and four touchdowns, giving the Longhorns a reliable second option in the backfield.

The receiving corps is deeper than just Ortegon. Senior Kolt Abbott, who caught 40 passes for 536 yards, brings consistency and toughness, while senior Phoenix Sandoval adds explosiveness after posting 30 receptions for 322 yards and seven touchdowns. With all three returning, Eilertson has one of the most experienced and balanced receiving groups in the region.

A major reason for optimism on offense is the returning strength up front. Seniors Ryan Rowley and Kade Christensen, along with junior Tucker Keele, all saw significant playing time last season and now anchor a veteran offensive line. Their experience and cohesion should give Eilertson the protection he needs and create the running lanes that allow Woods and Judy to thrive. The stability of this group is one of the most important factors in West Field’s ability to elevate its offensive production in 2026.

Ace Charlesworth

Defensively, the Longhorns bring back a similarly seasoned unit. Senior defensive back Ace Charlesworth returns as the team’s leading tackler with 49 stops, and senior Trevyn Thomas follows with 38. Sophomore Drew Combe adds young playmaking ability after recording two interceptions last season, giving the secondary a blend of experience and emerging talent.

Up front, seniors Chaz Barker, Logan McClure, and Cameron Lindstrom will be responsible for generating pressure and setting the tone physically. Their presence gives West Field a defensive front capable of disrupting opposing offenses and controlling the line of scrimmage.

Special teams will have one key storyline entering the season: finding a new kicker and punter. While those roles remain open, senior long snapper Isaac Gerritsen provides stability and leadership to the unit, giving the Longhorns a reliable foundation as they evaluate specialists throughout camp.

Altogether, West Field enters 2026 with a roster built to win now. The offense features star power, depth, and a veteran line. The defense returns leadership and experience at every level. Special teams has a stabilizing force in Gerritsen as new specialists emerge. With continuity, talent, and motivation, the Longhorns have every reason to believe they can compete for the region crown and make a deeper run in the 5A state playoffs.

Key games

August 14, 2026 vs Brighton Bengals immediately tests the Longhorns against one of the top teams in the state.

September 11, 2026 vs Bonneville Lakers for homecoming, a game that comes directly after a tough rivalry matchup with Roy. Avoiding a letdown will be critical, especially with the Lakers expected to be much improved by that point in the season.

October 16, 2026 at Box Elder carries emotional weight as well; it’s the site where West Field’s 2025 playoff run ended, and the Bees’ trademark physicality will challenge the Longhorns’ toughness and discipline.
