Two first-quarter safeties and a kickoff-return touchdown helped Davis seize momentum early and never look back.
Coleman, defense fuel championship effort
The Darts forced turnovers, dominated field position, and received game-changing plays from Sam Coleman on special teams and on defense.
Davis left little doubt about the Region 1 championship Wednesday night, overwhelming the Weber Warriors 52-6 to secure the outright league crown.
With a dominant defense, punishing ground game, and explosive special teams, Davis controlled the contest from start to finish. Senior Sam Coleman sparked the rout with a 78-yard kickoff-return touchdown and later added a 100-yard interception return for a score. In contrast, senior running back Kysen Gallegos and junior Briggs Taylor helped power an offense that consistently won the battle at the line of scrimmage. The offensive line of seniors Mason Bush, Curly McConnachie, Krew Plyer, Hudson Smith and junior Noah Bingham controlled the line of scrimmage in the game.
The first quarter began with both offenses struggling to find rhythm. Weber’s opening possession quickly turned into trouble when a punt snap sailed over the punter’s head and out of the back of the end zone for a safety, giving Davis a 2-0 lead with 8:24 remaining in the quarter.

Sam Coleman
The Darts wasted no time capitalizing on the momentum. On the ensuing kickoff, Coleman fielded the ball and raced 78 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 9-0 just 13 seconds later. Weber’s next possession ended with another setback when senior Bridger Young recovered a Warriors fumble near midfield, giving Davis excellent field position.
While the Darts offense didn’t immediately convert the turnover into points, the defense kept dictating the game. Davis pinned Weber deep at its own 1-yard line, and another special-teams miscue led to a second safety when the Warriors’ punter stepped out of the back of the end zone before getting off his kick. The safety pushed the lead to 11-0 with 2:51 left in the opening quarter.
Darts’ offense starts to find rhythm
Davis then turned to its ground attack. Gallegos capped a methodical drive with a 3-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, giving the Darts an 18-0 advantage. The senior running back finished the night with a game-high 92 rushing yards on 14 carries.
The second quarter brought more of the same. Senior quarterback Paden Toula connected with Taylor on a screen pass, and the senior running back turned it into a 32-yard touchdown, making it 24-0 with 7:47 remaining before halftime.
Toula added another scoring strike later in the quarter, finding senior Cooper Rigby on a 21-yard touchdown pass over the middle. The score stretched the Davis lead to 32-0 with just over two minutes left before intermission.
A commanding lead at the half for the Darts
Weber responded with its most promising drive of the night, marching deep into Davis territory, but Coleman delivered the game’s signature play. The senior defensive back stepped in front of a goal-line pass, secured the interception, and sprinted 99 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. The dramatic return sent the Darts into halftime with a commanding 39-0 lead and one hand firmly on the Region 1 trophy.
The teams exchanged touchdowns in the third quarter. Weber got on the board when junior receiver Creed DeVries caught a 71-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Kellan Carter, cutting the deficit to 39-6 with 5:08 left in the quarter.
Davis answered late in the period when junior quarterback Cam Moody found senior Jaxton Itaaehau for a 16-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 46-6. The Darts put the finishing touches on the championship victory in the fourth quarter when junior Brooks Bailey broke free for a 16-yard touchdown run, closing out the 52-6 win.

Ben Dorius
The victory capped an impressive regular season for Davis (7-3) and secured the outright Region 1 championship. Toula, who took over as the starting quarterback in the fourth game of the season, has thrown for more than 1,800 yards and 21 touchdowns while helping transform the Darts into one of the state’s most balanced teams.
“Honestly, this year has been a roller coaster of events, but it has been the most fun and exciting season I’ve ever had,” Toula said. “I’ve been able to play with my best friends from Bonneville and make more of my new best friends that I will forever be grateful for.”
“For me personally, I’ve been proud of how I’ve handled the year,” Toula said. “At the start, there were times when it was rough, but I kept my head down and waited for my opportunity.”
The Davis offensive line played a major role in the championship-clinching victory, paving the way for the rushing attack while controlling the trenches all night. Bush said the Darts entered the game determined to play like champions.
“The plan coming into the game was to pressure them early and play like a region champ,” Bush said. “As an o-line, our goal was to dominate the trenches and run effectively. We took a minute to get going in the first quarter, but through the rest of the game we had our way with them.we had our way with them for the rest of the game
“Having it be my last year as a senior has made this season mean even more, and I’m glad I get to play with all the great guys we have on our team,” Bush said. “I was blessed to be chosen as a captain and have tried my best to serve well, lead with confidence, and bring younger players along as we have improved together.”
“We love a region title, but our team goal has always been to win a state championship,” Bush said. “Excited for the playoffs, and I think we’ve got a real shot at it this year.”
Darts head into playoffs with confidence
Davis also features one of Utah’s top playmakers in senior Bode Sparrow, a University of Oklahoma commit who recently became the state’s all-time leader in career touchdown receptions with 59. Also on offense is University of Utah commit Itaaehau, who shows his athleticism as a running back and wide receiver. Defensively, junior Ben Dorius anchored a relentless front, recording two sacks and a team-high six tackles in the title-clinching victory. Senior Dexter Frasure and junior Bridger Young are fast, athletic, physical tacklers on defense.
“My mindset going into the game was knowing their offense was going to look a little different due to injuries,” Dorius said. “We wanted to go out early and control the line of scrimmage against the run, get into the backfield, and consistently make the quarterback uncomfortable. Personally, I wanted to round out the regular season by displaying my competitiveness and showcasing what I am capable of.”
“Winning region was one of this team’s main goals throughout the entire season, so getting it done felt great,” Dorius said. “This team has a ton of great leaders and so much talent, and this is just the start of what’s to come as we continue to work hard and improve heading into the playoffs.”
For Weber, DeVries continued his outstanding junior campaign. The receiver entered the game with more than 1,000 receiving yards and 16 touchdown receptions and added another long scoring catch against the Darts. Senior Bracken Day also recorded his fourth interception of the season to lead the Warriors, and senior Carson Hill led all defensive players with nine tackles in the game.
Weber competed without starting quarterback Carter Payne, who suffered a leg injury the previous week. Despite the setback, Kellan Carter provided a solid effort under center against one of the state’s top defensive units.
With the regular season complete, the Darts head into the postseason as Region 1 champions, carrying momentum, confidence, and championship aspirations following one of their most complete performances of the year.
