Last week ball was certainly not life in Logan. The men’s team lost at home to the BYU Cougars to fall below a .500 winning percentage. The women only had one win. However, this week the women had a big rivalry win and the Aggie men recovered with a win of their own.
Utah State women’s basketball: Unless you’re a BYU fan it’s great to see an upset like this. BYU women’s basketball hadn’t lost to the Aggies since 1978. That all changed on Wednesday night. The Aggies held off a late Cougar comeback and won 76-69 in Provo. The Aggies were led by senior guard Rachel Brewster who scored 20 points. Perhaps this kind of monumental rivalry win will get the 2-6 Aggies back on track.
USU men’s basketball: The males also got a win over UC Irvine but that was to be expected. Still one thing definitely changed in the positive direction in this game: free throw percentage. The Aggies hit 76.5 percent of their free throws which was a huge improvement from the putrid 32 percent they shot against BYU last week. Much of that was thanks to Koby McEwen playing like the team leader he is. McEwen hit just 3-9 free throws against BYU but shook off the demons to hit a respectable 7-9 free throws including two at the end of the game to beat the Anteaters 62-59.
It was an ugly win but that’s what the Aggies wanted. They played tough defense and will need to continue to do so to have a chance at the Beehive Classic this Saturday. The Battle of the Brothers basketball edition tips off for the first time since 2010. You can catch this game on the PAC-12 network at 5:30 PM MST.
