Aggies vs Aztecs: Offense vs Defense

Utah State had one of the highest scoring offenses in the nation last year and looks pretty good this year. Last year, they avoided some good teams on the schedule. Replacing San Jose State, Hawaii and UNLV with Nevada, Fresno and San Diego State this year could make double digit wins a tough journey for the Aggies who are 1-1 after two non-conference games.

Let’s take a look at San Diego State, a team the Aggies have never beaten since joining the Mountain West. Utah State’s lone win came in 1967 when they beat the Aztecs 31-25. Most of the time the Aggies gave been dominated as only 2 of SDSU’s 12 wins over the Aggies were one possession games.

How could USU possibly be worried about a team who struggled to score against Weber State? The answer is simple: the Aztecs won the game by connecting on two field goals and shut Weber State out. While the Wildcats are a good team, the Aggie offense is much more formidable. The key will be to stop the run.

This is the first matchup between the Aggies and Aztecs since 2016, when the Aztecs pummeled the Aggies 40-13 in Logan, Utah. It was part of a very disappointing 3-9 season for the Aggies. This year’s Aggies look pretty great on offense and they have the potential to be good enough on defense, at least on the defensive line. The secondary needs work, but in a game like this it would be smart to make the Aztecs one-dimensional and take away the run.

San Diego State has quieted the Aggies a few times. In 2015 Utah State was looking like a team to beat after crushing Boise State 52-26. All that hope of a possible Mountain Division Title came crashing down when a thorough beating by the Aztecs left the Aggies just hoping for a bowl game.

There’s a first time for everything, as we saw in the 2018-2019 basketball season. The Aggies had not beaten the Aztecs in basketball before, but they proceeded to beat them twice in the course of a month.

The time is now. Jordan Love is healthy. The Aggies have good weapons from the transfer portal, and it looks like they will contend for the Mountain West Title. It will be a fierce battle with an Aztecs team that is just one of four undefeated Mountain West teams and the only one in the West Division.

My prediction: The Aztecs’ running back will be the X-Factor. The Aggies win for sure IF they score over 30 points.
